The Aster Flower is the September Birth Flower and since it is, in fact, September, it is time for a Flower Spotlight! Asters get their name from the greek word meaning star, since their blooms resemble one. With their yellow centers, they also resemble Daisies, yet they are actually a relative of the Sunflower. Asters are said to symbolize love, faith and wisdom and during the Victorian Era, their hidden meaning was said to say, “Take care of yourself for me”. In addition to being the September birth flower, they are also the 20th wedding anniversary flower, so would make a wonderful gift for someone who has reached the 20 year mark!
Asters look great in Wildflower or Country Chic arrangements and they come in a variety of different colors and varieties, ranging from the standard Aster, with it’s spray of tiny blooms, to Solidago Asters, which feature clusters of miniature blooms on a spray of stems, giving them a wispy and feathery feel, to Matsumoto Asters, with a single bloom per stem, daisy-like centers and a larger size than standard asters, and now we carry Beauty Asters, the largest of the asters we carry with one large and lush, petal-heavy bloom per stem. Pair any of these asters with other “wildflower’ style blooms like daisies, wax flower or larkspur to create your country chic centerpieces in a mason jar, or combine with roses to add a delicate, vintage feel to an otherwise classic bouquet.

Most of the Asters at FiftyFlowers.com are available year-round, with the exception of the Beauty Asters, which are available July through October. Aster Flowers should be delivered 2-3 days before your event and to care for your fresh Asters, just follow the steps below!
- Open your box of flowers and inspect. If upon first inspection, you foresee a problem with your flowers, call us immediately at 1-877-507-6737. However, it is absolutely NORMAL for your flowers to appear sleepy and thirsty after their journey.
- Ensure that your flower buckets are clean and disinfected.
- Fill the buckets with at least 4 inches of fresh, cool water. If you have flower food follow the instructions on the packet to prepare your water.
- Remove flowers from box by cutting any straps.
- Remove any plastic or paper packaging from each bunch of flowers.
- Cut stems diagonally under running water with sharp scissors or a knife about 1-2 inches from the bottom of the stem.
- Remove any foliage that may fall below the water line. Foliage in the water will cause bacteria to form faster and will affect the life of your flowers.
- Immediately after cutting, place the stems in the prepared buckets.
- Allow flowers at least 4 hours to hydrate well. Flowers may take up to 12 hours to properly hydrate.
- Keep flowers away from direct sunlight, drafts or excessive heat.
- Change water every 24 hours to keep flowers fresh. Assure that your flowers have sufficient water. The flowers will drink an exceptionally large amount of water upon arrival.
Enjoy your flowers!
