Freedom: 2021’s Biggest Wedding Trend for Summer & Fall

Getting married in 2021 comes with a new set of rules, information, and expectations. These weddings are unique because unlike any other year, there are more couples than ever getting married. The wedding industry has become inundated with more business and that’s because there are now two years worth of couples queued up, ready to tie the knot. This has created a trend cycle, unlike anything we’ve ever seen. So if you’re in the throes of wedding planning, or a professional in the industry trying to understand what to expect, I’ve done the research to show you the biggest trend in flowers this year.

Let’s dive into what we will be seeing trending this year and why.

Flower Trends

Traditional, un-traditional, non-seasonal, and flowers not normally popular in certain geographical locations are what we can expect to see trending in weddings in 2021. Expect the unexpected! Traditions will be honored as well as reimagined.

What does that look like?

Colorful Mixes

For many couples, the last two years have proven to many that it is important to live in the moment, and for wedding flowers, that looks like bright and colorful flowers. Couples are embracing the beautiful ways in which life and love come together to paint the larger picture of their wedding day. Colorful flowers incorporated into your wedding display happiness, joy, excitement, and gives the wedding a bright appearance.
This year we’ve seen Ranunculus, Peonies, Standard and Garden Roses, SunFlowers, Anemones, Delphiniums, Carnations in unusual new shades, Craspedia Billy Balls, and Stock incorporated into wedding flower bouquets and arrangements.

Tropicals

In the past, I have seen tropicals be a prominent trend in locations where those flowers and greens are grown naturally. But in the last two years, tropical elements have grown popular in non-coastal areas. Tropicals are an amazingly hardy and unique element to bring into a wedding and I can see why it has gained such demand after a year of no one being able to plan or enjoy a tropical getaway. With tropicals, less is more. The stems do cost more than the average wedding flower (carnations, daisies, etc.) but you do not need as many flowers or greenery for a tropical-centric wedding. The most popular tropical flowers we are selling all over the country are Proteas, Anthuriums, Ginger, Monstera Leaves, and assorted Tropical Greenery. To make this process easier for our amazing FiftyFlowers clients, we’ve developed a variety of mixed combo packs and pre-made arrangements! (Will you be linking these here?)

White Flowers, Emerald Greenery

Tradition is tradition for a reason. White has been the largest wedding color used for many, many years. It complements the symbolism of the white dress and sanctity of marriage that honors love’s new beginnings. In the past, white has symbolized purity and innocence, but the general observance of that symbolism has mostly faded away. The white and green color palette sets the tone in the wedding design now of chic minimalism. But minimalism does not mean fewer flowers. Many couples using this palette trade color variation for a larger amount of designs. This means the flowers and greenery are the same throughout the entire wedding, but there are large arch pieces, lush centerpieces, flowers for every person involved in the ceremony, and decorative pieces throughout the reception. Our DIY couples are trend-savvy creative geniuses! The most popular products being used in these weddings are all white Standard and Garden Roses, Hydrangeas, Peonies, Lisianthus, Ranunculus, Stock, Anemones, Italian Ruscus, Tree Fern, and Willow Eucalyptus.

Non-Seasonal

We all know a couple whose original spring 2020 wedding faced huge disruptions. Many of these couples have now since married in the Fall of 2020 or planned for a wedding in some other season of 2021. The interesting information coming in about these couples is that despite their wedding now being in a different season, many kept or are keeping their original floral inspiration. I’ve seen many weddings keep their Spring vibe in their new Fall wedding. For those who went through the chaos of COVID wedding re-planning, they fell in love with that original wedding vision and the trials and tribulations of the next year have proven to them that it is more important to plan the wedding flowers you love, instead of letting that season’s colors determine the look. Some flowers that look stunning across every season are Ranunculus, Anemones, Garden Roses, Larkspur, Tulips. Thanks to the modern flower growing system, you can expect to see flowers have a year-round growing cycle.

Non-Floral Wedding Trends

While my expertise lies in the floral side of the wedding industry, I can stay in touch with trends and current information with various other sides of the wedding world. Many of these new normals will impact how you order and prepare for your wedding flowers. Keep reading to learn more about how current weddings have changed.

More DIY Weddings

Over the last year, the larger population of the United States faced various forms of financial instability. But love stops for no economy. With many couples now looking to discover the best methods to stick to their decided wedding budgets, the DIY Wedding Flower option has become one of the largest growing avenues. And you could say we’re ecstatic about this! We are here for every size, style, and budget wedding. There are many resources provided by FiftyFlowers.com, including Blogs, Youtube Tutorials, Real-Time industry updates on our Social Media channels.

Here are three of my latest blogs packed with professional advice for the DIY Wedding customer:

Destination Weddings

No surprises here. We all could use a good vacation. Airbnb’s, Resorts, National Parks and so many other locations have become a new option as a wedding venue. This makes it easy for the couple to turn their wedding into a fun and adventurous occasion. Thankfully, FiftyFlowers offers delivery to the entire continental United States. When you’re placing your order you can note in the delivery instructions that the delivery location is not a residence but a rental. I’ve seen many couples enjoy the designing process at their rentals. If you don’t see being able to maintain several different buckets of product, the Pre-Made Wedding Collections make destination wedding flowers painlessly simple.

Minimony – Large Wedding Size

With the most recent CDC guidelines, weddings are looking at returning to their pre-COVID normal for the first time since the onset of the Global Pandemic. Couples, plan the wedding size that makes you feel comfortable. If you realized the big party was not for you, and that your love is best celebrated with a small and intimate group, look into a design like the Hanging Floral Arrangement. These larger designs give you and your guests a unique and immersive experience that many weddings had not known until COVID. For a larger wedding, check out this blog on how to think about centerpieces for your many reception tables.

Smaller Engagement Periods

COVID showed many couples the importance of what marriage is about. With the increased popularity of Virtual Zoom Weddings, their wedding day becomes refocused on the joining of two people and not the party. Now, at the beginning of our post-COVID wedding world, the theme of shorter engagements has emerged. Wedding planning has become about planning the wedding of your dreams, but not waiting for other factors to be ready. If you are in the middle of planning a wedding with a small amount of time from engagement to wedding day, be sure to meet with our professional wedding consultant. Emily will walk you through picking flowers, delivery dates, building your bouquet and arrangement recipes, and any other flower advice you might need. Click here to schedule your consultation!

Weekday Weddings

Now that weddings are able to resume safely, there is two years’ worth of weddings now looking to book a venue. Many professionals in the wedding industry now find themselves booked out for the next 1 – 2 years. If you find yourself trying to book a venue for this year or next, many couples are now booking on weekdays instead of weekends. Being open to this option can mean getting a sooner wedding date rather than one a couple of years away. If you are one of these couples with a weekday wedding, be sure to chat or consult the FiftyFlowers Customer Service team to assure that your product delivery dates will allow all your flowers to bloom properly.

I am beyond excited to get back into the swing of wedding season. Small or large, I believe every wedding is important, and I hope that this information and research has helped you. Being in this industry for so long, I know that no matter the size, wedding planning is a taxing event to plan. If you would like to read more about wedding planning and trends, check out these sources that I frequently turn to for high-level updates (Vogue, Green Wedding Shoes). 2020 was a roller coaster ride of a year, and the biggest trend I have seen grow from the ashes is that nothing is predictable for weddings this year. Couples are embracing new levels of wedding freedom that will be impossible to dictate what trends will be for certain. So whether you’re a bride reading this blog, or a florist looking to understand what’s to come, stay flexible, and know that flowers are ALWAYS the right choice!
